PESHAWAR: As many as 136,508 registered voters are expected to exercise their right of franchise in the by election in Peshawar-VIII (PK-8) scheduled for Thursday (tomorrow) as the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has completed all the arrangements.
According to Provincial Election Commission (PEC), the polling will commence at 8am and will continue till 5pm without any break. The voters in the premises of polling stations would be allowed to cast their votes after expiry of the set time.
The campaign for electioneering ended at 12pm on May 10, and the election materials including ballot papers would be handed over to the presiding officers of the polling stations on Thursday morning.
The total registered voters in the constituency are 136,508. A total of 98 polling stations, including 39 very sensitive and 48 sensitive, have been setup for the registered voters. Moreover, 257 polling booths and tight security arrangements have also been made for the election. All the presiding officers will be assigned the powers of first class magistrates for three days to counter any indecent situation.
The PEC has directed all the political parties and candidates to ensure the implementation of directives given by the ECP for a peaceful by- election. The election commission urged voters to come in large number to cast their votes without any fear.
A total of 15 candidates will try their luck in the by- election and prominent among them are; Pakistan People’s Party’s (PPP) Malak Tehmash, Pakistan Muslim League-N’s (PML-N) Arbab Waseem, Jamiat Ulma-e-Islam-Fazl’s (JUI-F) Asif Iqbal Daudzai, Awami National Party’s (ANP) Ijaz Ahmed and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) Shahzad Khan for the PK-8 seat of the Khyber Pakhtunkwa Assembly.
PK-8 constituency that is mostly comprised of rural and urban areas has fallen vacant following the death of PML-N lawmaker Akbar Hayat Khan due to heart attack.
